$2.8 million jury verdict against an emergency room physician for failing to diagnose and treat a deep vein thrombosis resulting in his death from a pulmonary embolism. Estate of Jabari Rhodes v. Dr. Khalid Malik. 29-year-old Jabari Rhodes passed out at the train station on his way to work. 911 was called, and he was taken to the emergency room where he was worked up for a syncopal (fainting) episode. Tests were ordered to rule out a heart attack, aortic dissection, and drugs/alcohol as the cause of his fainting episode; however, nothing was done to rule out a pulmonary embolism as the cause of his fainting episode. Jabari was discharged from the hospital and died later that day from a pulmonary embolism. A $25,000 settlement offer was made by the Defense for the emergency room physicians before the trial.
